Bring it on 2016!
2015 was a pretty great year – we moved to Madrid, ate delicious foods, and saw so many beautiful things and wonderful places. 2016 has some pretty big shoes to fill, but I have a good feeling it will be amazing.
To kick off the year, I thought I would share with you a few of my goals for 2016:
Learn a New Language
Although I started learning Spanish in 2015 this is something I want to (obviously) keep working on in 2016 and throughout our time in Madrid. I’ve made small progress here and there, and I want to keep this trend going. One way this I am going to do to try and improve my confidence and understanding is to attend one intercambio (or language exchange) each week. There are SO many options here in Madrid, so I’m bound to find one that works for me, and I know that by sitting down and having regular conversations I’m bound to pick up more of the language (I mean, I have to, right?!)
Travel to 10 NEW Countries
We kicked off the year in Estonia, and we’re currently planning a trip that will take us through Austria and Hungary. Three down, seven to go! I know for some travel bloggers this isn’t a crazy, out there goal, but for me this is realistic (although my not-so-secret hope is that I blow this one out of the water!)
Grow my freelance business
As I mentioned in my last Expat Update, I’ve decided to give freelance work a go. Most of my career has been spent in marketing and communications (which I love), but I’ve decided to focus on social media management and public layout while I get myself set up and started.
Shameless plug: Are you or a friend looking for help with your social media channels, looking for someone to help create and curate content? If so, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Read 18 Books
Again, this isn’t some crazy out there goal. I read 16 books (and listened to one audiobook) in 2015, so I’d like to challenge myself to read 18. No specific requirements, any genre will do, as long as I’m making an effort to read books.
Drink More Water
This is a goal that seems to come up year in, year out. Some days I’m better than others, but more often than not I’m on the verge of dehydrated. Here’s to making 2016 the year of H20.
Do a Better Job of Staying in Touch
I go through phases where I’m really good at this, and then I stop and emails sit in my inbox for weeks without a response. This year, I would like to be better at keeping in touch with regularly, and to not letting emails pile up in my inbox.
Master a New Hobby
Take photography to the next level? Actually knit more than a few rows here and there, and learn to knit something other than scarves? I haven’t decided what my new hobby should be, but these are my top two contenders at the moment.
Maintain an exercise routine
Whether it’s one a week, twice a week or five times a week, I want to establish and stick to a routine.
Go Back to school (maybe!)
This one is still up in the air. There are a few programs that interest me in a few really cool cities, I’m just not 100% sure I’m in the right headspace (or financial space) to go back and complete a 1-2 year Masters; but I’m very intrigued, so we’ll see how this one plays out.
Make the Most of 2016
In just a few weeks I’ll be celebrating my 30th birthday (gasp!) and I want to make the absolute most of this year: I want to eat new foods. I want to experience new things, and new countries. I want to do something that scares me (within reason — no bungee jumping or python wrangling). I want this year to be beyond my wildest dreams! I know this sounds like a big goal, but hey, if you’d told me in 2013 that I’d be living in Madrid within two years I wouldn’t have believed you.
