My Travel Bucket List: Eindhoven

My Travel Bucket List: Eindhoven, Netherlands []

This weekend, I’m off to Eindhoven, Netherlands for what is most likely the last city break of the summer. I can’t really believe that this is our last planned holiday for the season, but so is the life of two adults with jobs and deadlines, and without trust funds. Sigh.

But, let’s be honest, a little travel is better than no travel, and I must admit, I am very excited for this upcoming mini-break!

Eindhoven is a city in the province of North Brabant, located in the south of the Netherlands. While it is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, it is best known as a high-tech and cutting-edge design industry hub.

Now, it probably isn’t the first destination you’d think of visiting in the Netherlands, and to be honest, it wasn’t mine either, but it is home to friends of ours and when we were invited to come and visit, we jumped at the chance. I mean, who doesn’t love visiting and exploring another part of a beautiful and beloved country!

Top Ten Things I’m Excited to See, Do and Eat:

Go Biking

When in the Netherlands, rights?!

See the Evoluon

This mushroom/UFO-shaped building was built in 1966 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Philips, whose birthplace was Eindhoven, representing and celebrating the company’s technological achievements. This futuristic design isn’t something I would have ever expected to come across in the Netherlands, so I hope we get a chance to lay eyes on it while we’re there.

See the Blob

It’s a building in the city centre nicknamed the blob, do I really need to explain myself further?!

Van Abbemuseum

The Van Abbemuseum is one of the leading museums for modern and contemporary art, whose collection includes the works of Picasso, Mondriaan, Chagall, and more. While we most likely won’t have time to go into the museum and experience the collections, I would like to make a point of just seeing the building, as it is apparently quite the sight itself.

Ride along the Hovenring and through the Eindhoven Dommeltunneltje

While biking around, I’d like to take a ride on the hovenring, a suspended bicycle path roundabout on the border between Eindhoven and Veldhoven. Fun fact, it is the first suspended bicycle roundabout in the world and will be a good opportunity to test whether my fear of heights is still alive and well.

I would also love to ride through Eindhoven Dommeltunneltje, a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel whose walls are a tribute to Monty Phyton.

Wander through Stadswandelpark

Despite the city’s reputation as a technology hub, Eindhoven is, in fact, the greenest of the five largest cities in the Netherlands, as well as the greenest of the top five cities within the North-Brabant province.

Stadswandelpark is located at walking distance from the centre and is decorated with 30 or so sculptures, and it sounds like a wonderfully peaceful place to spend an afternoon.

Eat Herring

It’s been a long time since our resident herring expert last had herring so I think it’s time we both got back in the saddle and sampled some of this delicious but polarising fish.

Drink coffee and people watch in Market Square

There’s nothing I love more than sitting down with a delicious cup of coffee and watching the people and the world go by, and in Eindhoven, there’s no better place to do that than in the Grand Café terraces in the heart of the city.

Gorge on delicious Dutch snacks, cakes, cheese and bread

This is a vacation after all, and I do love cheese.

Stratumseind is Eindhoven’s main nightlife area and is home to the longest pub-street in the Netherlands. With more than 40 bars to choose from this is the perfect spot for a Dutch pub crawl.

Have I missed anything? What would you recommend I add to my list?
